Seven Poems, by Ikkyu Sojun.
Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 2022. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Octavo. (28)pp., + 5 plates. From an edition of thirty-three copies, this is one of eight deluxe copies, with etchings printed in turquoise, an extra suite of five woodcuts bound in at rear, and specially bound by Thomas Zwang. The etchings, which are different than the woodcuts, punctuate the seven rhythmic poems by Ikkyu Sojun gathered here. Sojun, a 15th-century inconoclastic Zen monk, infused his writings with his Buddhist practice, and they ring of self-awareness, natural beauty, and calm. Bound in flexible bamboo covers with leather onlays at outer corners. Mint. An errata slip, handwritten and signed by Kaldewey, acknowledges a misspelling in the fourth line of the first poem; Kaldewey printed a corrected batch of sheets, and had recalled all copies to have them disassembled and rebound with the correction. This copy is the outlier to that set, retaining the original error and having the corrected sheet laid in. Item #31768
