Sandymount Strand, by Seamus Heaney.
(Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1993). Kaldewey, Gunnar. Small circular folio. 14ff. From an edition of fifty-two copies, this is one of twelve hand-colored by the artist and specially bound. Signed by Heaney and Felim Egan, who has contributed twelve aquatint etchings. This publication marks the first appearance of two short poems by Heaney, which bookend text from the first chapter of Ulysses that describes the features of the famous Irish beach. Egan's etchings further flesh out the shape and colors of this verbal landscape. A title that is often lacking from Heaney collections, Sandymount Strand was published two years before the poet was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. A very fine copy, bound in full green calf with textured design in relief, and with inlaid label of fluorescent plastic foil. Housed in chemise and slipcase. Laid in is the invitation, issued by the Museum of Modern Art, announcing the launch of the book and the 1993 exhibit "Artists Books of the Kaldewey Press." Item #31763
