Speech Patterns.

Somerville, MA: Sarah Hulsey, 2022. Hulsey, Sarah. Oblong 24mo. Unpaginated, accordion-fold with leaves inserted. One of 35 copies. Speech Patterns employs schematic shapes to represent unconsciously known rules of language. Printed backgrounds of words, or of dotted lines in the place of words, suggest the large body of lexical knowledge that every speaker has. Schematic shapes, printed and die cut and wrapped in a translucent sheet, lie over these background words, abstractly illustrating patterns within languages. Much of the accordion is given to pages with dotted lines; a feature by which Hulsey universalizes her schematics, applying them beyond English, while hinting at the far greater number of unknown words than the known ones provided. The verso of the accordion is devoted solely to setting the schematic shapes against the dotted and evocative pattern.

Printed letterpress from polymer plates, die-cutting, and etching. Bound in gray-green cloth over boards, with paper overlay to upper cover showing one of the schematics. Mint. Item #31588
