Words Scattered.

(San Francisco, CA): Thomas Ingmire, 2021. Ingmire, Thomas. Large quarto. (30)pp. A unique book, signed and dated by the artist. A continuation of Ingmire's interest in exploring the relationships between poetry, music, and calligraphy, Words Scattered captures the emotional and creative spontanaeity flowing back and forth between the jazz music of Steve Swallow and the verse of Robert Creeley. With great skill, Ingmire inserts himself and his art into that conversation. He first completed spontaneous drawings while listening to recordings of the Creeley/Swallow performances, which the two, after years of mutual influence, produced through two albums, one in 1999 and one in 2006. Ingmire's drawings have a synesthetic quality, employing colors, lines, and shapes to capture instruments and their sounds. At the second stage, Ingmire integrated Creeley's words in the way that musical notes lie over a score, each letter as a single piece of a melody floating over Swallow's jazz harmonies. The Creeley poems present are "Words Scattered," "Echo," "I Know a Man," "Just in Time," and "Eight Plus."
