Somerville, MA: 2017. Hulsey, Sarah. Octavo. One of 30 copies. A series of star charts, Asterisms embodies groups of linguistic sounds as constellations, or "asterisms," as is now the preferred term among astronomers. The phonemes (sounds) of the ten most widely spoken langauges are represented in twenty charts based on the International Phonetic Alphabet. Connecting the phonemes are novel asterism shapes printed as woodcuts and inspired by older, more mythical ways of tracing patterns in the sky. Hulsey thus deftly and imaginatively connects the most fundamental of human abilities - making sounds to communicate - with vastness of sky shared by all humanity, and with the equally fundamental human desire to communicate a shared mythology, whether vocally or astronomically.
