A Universal Lexicon.

Somerville, MA: 2018. Hulsey, Sarah. Octavo. One of 20 copies of the standard edition. Here, Hulsey pursues Galileo's comparison of the study of the cosmos with the study of a book to a literal end, codifying linguistic mathematics through forms offered by translation, Galileo's own astronomical diagrams, and a book's very structure. Where Galileo's metaphor underscored the importance of reading comprehension, whether of scientific symbols and figures or of language itself, Hulsey reverses it, so that Galileo's diagrammatic and textual depictions of the universe instead depict the sounds, syntax, and logic necessary to engage with the act of translation.
