Octon, France: Verdigris, 2007. Rothchild, Judith. 16mo. (14)pp., double accordionfold. One of forty-five copies, signed by the artist, Judith Rothchild. The volume opens to Rothchild’s stark engraving of manacled feet, filling the reader with immediate horror and discomfort as they read Victor Hugo’s letter to the United States criticizing the treatment of John Brown and the practice of slavery. The letter was written on December 2, 1859, the date of Brown’s unjust execution after the raid at Harper’s Ferry. It was published on both sides of the Atlantic and is presented here in both French and English. In it, Hugo warned of a coming civil war: “...the murder of Brown would be as irreparable fault. It would penetrate the Union with a gaping fissure which would lead in the end to its entire disruption. ...it is certain that it would shake to its centre the entire fabric of American democracy.” Bound in cloth-backed patterned paper over boards. Title and Hugo’s signature impressed on the front cover. Fine in a slipcase. Item #29963
